🇸🇪 Moving to Sweden: what you actually need to know

Sweden has one of the most straightforward employer-sponsored immigration systems in Europe: if you have a job offer that meets the collective agreement salary, the permit is almost guaranteed. The challenge is securing that offer. Swedish companies hire deliberately and interview processes run long.

Your main options for moving to Sweden

Work Permit (Arbetstillstånd)
Sweden's primary route for non-EU workers. Requires a job offer from a Swedish employer willing to offer at least the salary specified in the relevant collective agreement (kollektivavtal) for the role: there is no single national minimum wage threshold, it varies by sector. The employer advertises the position in the EU/EEA for 10 days before offering it to a non-EU national.
EU Blue Card
For highly qualified workers with a salary of at least 1.5x the average Swedish gross salary: approximately SEK 53,200/month (around €4,700) for 2026. Faster route to permanent residence than the standard work permit. Requires a higher education qualification relevant to the role.
Self-Employment Permit
For running your own business in Sweden. Requires a solid business plan, relevant qualifications, proof of sufficient capital (typically SEK 200,000+), and evidence of existing customers or contracts. Processed by Migrationsverket: typically takes 3–6 months.
Job Seeker Visa
Sweden does not have a formal job seeker visa for non-EU nationals. However, EU/EEA citizens can enter Sweden and search for work freely. Non-EU nationals must secure a job offer before applying for a work permit.

What it actually costs to live in Sweden

Stockholm
SEK 28,000–45,000/month (€2,500–4,000)
Rent for a 1-bed: SEK 12,000–22,000. Stockholm has a severe rental shortage: waiting lists for rent-controlled apartments run 10–20 years. Most newcomers rent privately at market rates.
Gothenburg / Malmö
SEK 22,000–35,000/month (€1,950–3,100)
Rent for a 1-bed: SEK 9,000–16,000. Both are major employment centres with lower costs than Stockholm. Malmö is 35 minutes from Copenhagen by train.
Smaller Swedish cities (Uppsala, Linköping, Örebro)
SEK 18,000–28,000/month (€1,600–2,500)
University cities with lower rents. Growing tech and biotech sectors. Strong quality of life with better housing availability than Stockholm.

What to do and in what order

1
Secure a job offer meeting the collective agreement salary
Your employer must offer a salary at or above the level specified in the relevant collective agreement for your occupation and sector. Check with your employer which collective agreement applies: this is not negotiable and is a hard requirement for the work permit.
2
Employer advertises the role in EU/EEA
Before offering the role to a non-EU national, your employer must advertise it within the EU/EEA for 10 days and confirm no suitable EU candidate applied. This is done via Arbetsförmedlingen (the Swedish Public Employment Service) or EURES.
3
Apply for the work permit
You apply online through Migrationsverket (the Swedish Migration Agency). Processing takes 1–4 months. You cannot start working until the permit is granted.
4
Register your Personnummer
Within 3 months of arriving, register at the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) to receive your personnummer: your 10-digit Swedish personal identity number. Required for healthcare, banking, and all public services. This is the most important step after arrival.
5
Register with a healthcare provider (Vårdcentral)
After receiving your personnummer, register with your local healthcare centre (Vårdcentral). Sweden's healthcare system is publicly funded: costs are minimal once you are registered.
Common mistake
The most common mistake is underestimating Stockholm's housing market. The rental shortage is severe: most newcomers spend months in short-term sublets (andrahand) while searching for a permanent home. Budget for 3–6 months of higher short-term accommodation costs before you find stable housing.

Common questions about moving to Sweden

What salary do I need for a Swedish work permit?
There is no single national threshold. The salary must meet or exceed the level in the relevant collective agreement (kollektivavtal) for your specific occupation and sector. For most white-collar roles this is approximately SEK 25,000–35,000/month. Your employer and union representatives set the rate: confirm it before applying.
Do I need to speak Swedish to move to Sweden?
Not for most work permit applications. English is widely spoken in Swedish workplaces, especially in tech, finance, and international companies. However, for long-term integration, especially accessing services, making friends, and navigating administration, learning Swedish significantly improves quality of life.
What is the Personnummer and why does it matter in Sweden?
The personnummer is your Swedish personal identity number: a 10-digit code that identifies you in every public and most private system. Without it, you cannot open a bank account with major banks, access healthcare, sign contracts, or use most digital services. Obtaining it quickly after arrival is the priority.
How long does a Swedish work permit take?
1–4 months at Migrationsverket, depending on the type of permit and current processing volumes. The EU Blue Card typically processes faster. You cannot start work until the permit decision is issued: factor this into your start date planning.
Can I bring my family to Sweden on a work permit?
Yes. Your immediate family members (spouse/partner and children under 18) can apply for a residence permit to join you. They receive the same duration permit as yours. Partners receive a permit that allows them to work in Sweden without restriction.
